Fraser says the year-end numbers show Canada is “well on track” to meet its goal of welcoming one million new immigrants over three years.

Canada’s immigration target for 2022 is 431,645. The government is committed to admitting more immigrants every year than ever before and has met its target for 2022 with 290,812 new arrivals so far in 2019.

“The numbers we’re seeing right now are historic,” says Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen of the agenda that guided the country’s immigration strategy over these last three years: create more opportunities by increasing skillsets; increase diversity through family reunification programs; make it easier for Canadians living abroad to return home; encourage skilled workers from around the world to immigrate here; welcome refugees fleeing war zones or natural disasters where they face danger at home.”

The total number of immigrants who came to Canada between January 1st and December 31st was reported as 513,300—a new record high for any single year.

This represents an increase of nearly 110,000 people compared to last year’s immigration level (503,200).
